RR#082 Your Humility Is Killing Your Business

Some internet marketers are just dying for attention.

You know who I’m talking about.

These people who will rent cars and hire models to convince some poor schmuck to buy their stuff.

No bueno.

You’ve got to wonder what these people are like in real life. And you can’t help but feel sorry for them.

Eh, that’s a lie. I actually don’t feel sorry for them at all.

But when I started building online, I had a deep-seated fear of being perceived as one of these people.

So I didn’t market myself that well.

I was creating some content. But it was like I was holding all the good “marketing” stuff back, like the wins, testimonials, social proof, and strong opinions.

I wanted the quality of the work I’d done throughout my career and my expertise to do the work for me.

And I didn’t want to come across like a braggart or show-off.

But, like a friend and mentor of mine often says:

No one really knows how good you are until after they hire you. Until then, you’re only as good as your marketing.

Which means I was letting fear of what people thought of me hold me back. And I was allowing the “a-holes of the internet” to keep me from growing my business and impact with clients.

I probably don’t have to tell you, but being the world’s best kept secret isn’t good for your pocketbook.

If you want to grow your business, you’ll have to start marketing yourself and your business.

I’m not saying you have to be a prolific content creator, share your life story, or start dancing on TikTok.

But you will likely need to push yourself out of your comfort zone and start marketing.

How’d I get over my fear of what people who didn’t matter thought and start marketing myself effectively?

It’s a question a lot of people said they’d like to hear about in a recent “ask me anything” thread on LinkedIn.

So I recorded a video on it. Discover how I overcame my fears and stepped up my marketing game.

Hope it helps you get started and level up.
