RR#073 You’re Better Than “On The Job Training”

For a lot of service providers, selling custom work for a diverse group of clients sounds fun.

 

With each new project, you get the opportunity to learn something completely new. Maybe it’s a fresh perspective on an industry you’ve never worked with. Or a different business model, or technology you get to ramp up on.

 

For those of us who love to soak up new information like a sponge, getting paid to learn is a dream. Plus, it’s seductive to say, “Sure, I can do that!” to just about any request that comes your way.

 

But here’s the thing: When you're constantly starting from scratch, you're essentially becoming a Jack-of-all-trades and a master of none.

 

And here’s the truth: it's kinda selfish. Why? Because the 'fun-for-you' mindset doesn't necessarily deliver the best value to your clients. You're basically learning on their dime, and that's not fair to them or good for your reputation.

 

I've been down this road myself.

 

When I first started selling services online, I dabbled in some marketing, some sales, some ops, some coaching, some consulting, and some fractional work.

 

And you know what happened? I got bogged down with proposals and learning curves. My marketing suffered from confused messaging. Selling what I did was incredibly hard, even for a 15-year sales veteran. And operationally, it was a mess to deliver after I sold it.

 

That’s why I’m so bullish on productized services.

 

Instead of trying to wear a thousand different hats, why not become the master of one? A productized service allows you to focus on delivering top-notch quality while giving you the scalability you didn't know you needed.

 

You can market it easier, you can sell it quicker, and, best of all, you get that sweet predictability in your revenue.
